A course is discontinued while you are studying a programme – what happens to your degree?
If a course within your programme is discontinued during your studies, this will normally not affect your ability to obtain your degree. You will have the opportunity to complete the course during the discontinuation period, during which several examination opportunities are provided.
As long as you complete the course before the discontinuation date, your ability to meet the degree requirements will not be affected.
What happens to your degree when a course has been discontinued?
The outcome depends on your situation:
If you have already completed the course
If you completed the discontinued course before the discontinuation date and included it in a degree that has been awarded, your degree will not be affected.
If the course is part of your programme but has not been completed
Check whether the course is compulsory or elective within your programme. This information can be found in the programme syllabus, which is available via kursplan.lnu.se.
- If the course is compulsory, you may need to take an equivalent course in order to meet the degree requirements.
- If the course is elective or optional, it is recommended that you contact a studycounsoller for guidance on how to complete your studies.
What happens if a programme has been discontinued and I have not applied for my degree?
If you have completed all the courses within the programme, you can still apply to have your degree awarded, even if the programme has been discontinued.

If I have completed (passed) an exam component, do I need to retake that component?
No, you only need to retake the exam components that you have failed. The exam components that you have already completed (passed), that is, received a passing grade for, do not need to be retaken.
I no longer live in the location where the course was offered – can I take the examination online?
No. If the examination is an on-campus (invigilated) exam, it must be taken in person and requires sign-up via Ladok.
