Welcome to Linnaeus University and the Master Programme in Mathematics and Modelling

My name is Wolfgang Bock. As the coordinator of the Master Programme in Mathematics and Modelling, I am glad wish you welcome as an admitted student to one of the two specializations of this programme: Algebra with Cryptography and Coding or Mathematical Statistics and Financial Mathematics

In this welcoming letter you will find some information about the programme. You can also visit our programme page for further information. Here you will also find the time and place for the introduction meeting.

Please check this page again before start, as more information might be published here.

Introduction meeting

At the introduction meeting you will get an overview of the programme.  Depending on your chosen specialization, you also select the elective courses for the first semester at this meeting (see below for a list of the courses).

It is very important that you arrive well prepared at the start of your master studies. I recommend you to review the material of the courses in mathematics that you have taken for your Bachelor degree.

Important

Late registration is not possible! If you do not register in Ladok, you will lose your admission to the programme. Registration means that you participate in the courses, and you cannot request a refund after registration. If, for unforeseen events you cannot participate physically on campus on day one, you must take part of the courses in the digital course rooms.

Visa information
As an International student enrolled at Linnaeus University, you might have to obtain a residence permit for studies in Sweden. For more information, please visit https://lnu.se/en/student/preparing-for-your-stay/residence-permit/

List of courses in the first semester

Each semester is divided into two so-called study periods. In each study period, you study two courses in parallel.

The first study period of the autumn semester contains the following courses, on the respective specializations of the programme:

4MA508 Statistical Data Analysis
Course literature: James, Witten, Hastie & Tibshirani: An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in R, Springer

4MA411 Integration Theory (elective)
Course literature: Fomin & Kolmogorov: Introductory Real Analysis, Dover Publications

2MA405 Algebraic Structures I (elective)
Course literature: Beachy & Blair: Abstract Algebra, Waveland Press

4MA416 Topology (elective)
Course literature: Fomin & Kolmogorov: Introductory Real Analysis, Dover Publications

MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS AND FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS:

4MA411 Integration Theory
Course literature: Fomin & Kolmogorov: Introductory Real Analysis, Dover Publications

4MA508 Statistical Data Analysis
Course literature: James, Witten, Hastie & Tibshirani: An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in R, Springer

In the second study period (starting in early November) you will study the following courses:

ALGEBRA WITH CRYPTOGRAPHY AND CODING:

4MA421 Algebraic Structures II
4MA501 Foundations of Probability

MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS AND FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS

4MA415 Functional Analysis
4MA501 Foundations of Probability

Career opportunities after completing the programme

In today's modern society, mathematics plays an increasingly significant role in science, humanities and industry. The increasing rate at which information and data are collected places a great demand on effective mathematical models and methods for dealing with this knowledge.

A master's degree in mathematical modeling opens up opportunities for an interesting career with a lot of variety in business and academia. Future professions can be found at companies that use advanced mathematical models, for example in audio and image processing, information security, electric power, machine and the construction industry. Students who follow the Mathematical Statistics and Financial Mathematics specialization are also interesting for insurance companies and banks.

The aim of this programme is to provide the students with extended depth of knowledge in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and an ability to develop mathematical models in an area of application. You can also continue with a postgraduate education in the field of mathematics.
