Welcome to Linnaeus University

Welcome to the English version of Network Security 180 credits (application code 01182 or F1061) at the Faculty of Technology.

Introduction
My name is Ola Flygt and I am Programme Director for the Bachelor programmes in Network Security and Software Technology at Linnaeus University in Växjö. In what follows, I will give you brief information related to your bachelor studies.

Important
If you are not a EU citizen or already have a residence permit in Sweden, you need to apply for a visa. In order to get a visa, you must contact the Swedish embassy in your home country. The administrative process associated with visa applications is often very slow. Hopefully you already know this and have started the process. If not, apply for a visa immediately! The university is not involved in the visa process, so unfortunately we cannot help you with that.

You need a place to stay (accommodation) when you arrive in Växjö. Getting a student accommodation can be difficult, especially if you wait too long. Hence, start looking for an accommodation immediately! You should already have received information about this from the admission office. The university help fee paying students to find accommodation. For the rest of you the student union give some help finding accommodation, see http://linnestudenterna.se/in-english/accomodation/finding-accommodation/

Study period (required in visa applications)
2 September 2019 to 16 June 2022.

General information about preparations
Please visit: https://lnu.se/en/education/Before-your-studies/

On this page you will also find information about how to get a student account in order to register and login to different online services provided buy the university. Registration is necessary in order to start the education to which you have been accepted.

Introductory meeting
There will be information days for all international students the week before the semester start. The International Relations office will give more information on this.

The official mandatory introductory meeting for these programmes are Monday 2 September at 9.00 am in room D1136 in Växjö (see Programme start meeting). It is at this meeting that you confirm your place at the program. Please note that you are required to notify us (see academic contact below) if you cannot attend to this meeting.

Exemption to attend the introductory meeting
Since we are aware of the difficulties for some foreign students to arrange with travels and housing in time for the programme start, we will grant one week exemption to attend the programme start meeting. In order for you to be able to carry out the programme, you are required to register personally in my office in Växjö no later than Monday 7 September 2018.

Prerequisites
As you are well aware of, the prerequisites for the programme is a degree from secondary level school and good knowledge in Mathematics and English. The two courses that you will start studying are also courses in English and Mathematics. If you don't pass these courses, you will probably have difficulties in passing upcoming courses as well, and if you don’t pass all courses at some time during the first year you might not be allowed to continue with your studies in the programme since most courses have prior courses as prerequisites. To avoid this from happening, I urge you to repeat and train your skills in Mathematics and English, starting today!

We do not have any specific requirements for computer skills (especially not in programming), but we do expect you to know how to use a computer for ordinary day-to-day activities like writing documents, sending e-mails, finding information on the Internet etc. If you have never done any programming, you might find the first year challenging. We do start from the beginning, but the pace in the courses is quite high.
To increase your chances of success, I therefore encourage you to start learning some programming on your own during the summer. There are many online courses and tutorials you can use. We concentrate on the Java programming language and the programming environment Eclipse, so look for that. Here are some examples:

http://www.vogella.com/tutorials/java.html

Computer
We strongly recommend that you have your own laptop during the education. The reason for this is that it is very difficult to get a good personal development environment on shared computers and the development environment you will be working in will be an important part of your education. There are computers on campus if you do not have your own computer, but in the long run it's not a good solution for you.

Slack
To communicate with the course management, socialize with other classmates and carry out presentations etc. we often use the web service "Slack". Here you also have an excellent opportunity to get all the help you need at the start of your studies no matter what time of day. Sign in already today! To log in, you need to create a new account at Slack with your email address associated with your university user account.

Information on courses
During your first semester (September 2019–January 2020) you will study four courses:

• 1MA441 Basic Mathematics for Computer Scientists, 7,5 hp (timetable)
• 1EN114 English for academic studies 7,5 hp (timetable)
• 1DV506 Problem Solving and Programming, 7,5 hp (timetable)
• 1DV510 Technical Information and Communication, 7,5 hp (timetable)

Please note that all the schedules haven't been finalized yet at the time of writing. Check the online timetables regularly for changes, also once you already started the courses.

Syllabi/ Literature
Please visit: Course and programme syllabi

Sometimes there is a need to change literature after the syllabus has been decided. For that reason it is always a good idea to check that the information is correct before buying any books. You do that either by checking the information in the course room in MyMoodle (the learning management systemused for most courses) or by contacting the teacher of the course.

For 1MA441 there is still no English version of the syllabus available. This is the literature international students will use on that course:

  • Kevin Houston, How to think like a Mathematician, Cambridge Uni. Press, 2009, 200 sidor
