Welcome to your English first semester course. This full-time course will run during the autumn term 2021 (30 August 2021 – 16 January 2022). The course is based at the Kalmar campus of Linnaeus University, Sweden.

The compulsory course introduction meeting and the first lectures of the course take place on Monday 30 August, at 10:00-12:00, the place will be announced on your schedule. If you cannot attend the meeting, please contact the course coordinator (see contact details at the bottom of this page), before the meeting takes place. If you fail to do this, we will assume that you are no longer interested and give your place to someone on the waiting list. Last day to register online is on 30 August. NB! Your first Language in use seminar takes place after lunch on the same day as your course introduction.

Remember to purchase some of the literature before the course begins. Make sure you allow for delivery time when you order online. Please note that literature marked as reference works in the course syllabus is not compulsory. You will need the following literature at the very beginning of term:

  • Estling Vannestål, Maria. senaste upplagan. A University Grammar of English with a Swedish Perspective. Lund: Studentlitteratur. 535 s. NB! The course begins on Monday, August 30, so you will need this book very soon.

  • Harmer, Jeremy. Senaste upplagan. The practice of English language teaching. New York: Pearson/Longman.

  • Bygrave, Jonathan, Cunningham, Sarah & Moor, Peter. 2013. 3rd edition. Cutting Edge, upper intermediate, students' book with DVD. Harlow: Pearson.

  • Gardner, Janet E. and Joanne Diaz. Reading and Writing about literature: A Portable Guide. The latest edition. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin's. Accompanied by a set of online material, "LaunchPad Solo for Literature" THIS BOOK CAN BE TRICKY TO GET, BUT IS AVAILABLE AT THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN VÄXJÖ + AS ELECTRONIC VERSION AT https://www.macmillanlearning.com/college/ca/product/Reading-and-Writing-about-Literature/p/131921505X . The reading list for the literature courses will also comprise the following three titles in the order that they are stated here:

  • Shakespeare, William. 2014. Romeo and Juliet. Red. Robert Smith. The Cambridge School Shakespeare. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

The module Introduction to English linguistics begins a few weeks into term, but you need to have the book by the end of September. 

  • Yule, George. 2020. 7th edition. The study of language. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 

Other books on the literature list will be needed later in the term.

The English department uses a course management tool called MyMoodle. Please note that you will need a student account log-in to be able to access the course material in MyMoodle. This service opens about one week before the course starts.

Note that you will have to register on the course in order to be able to follow it. You can sometimes register online. However, if this does not work you will be registered when attending the compulsory introductory meeting.

If you decide not to take the course, after registering on it, please contact our Ladok secretary so that she can take you off the lists.
