4. Thesis courses

4.1. 30-credit thesis course

Timing

This is a 20-week course. This course begins January 19, 2026 and ends June 7, 2026. (Please note that supervisors are only allotted hours to supervise during the running of the course.)

Syllabus

The syllabus for this course can be found here: https://kursplan.lnu.se/kursplaner/syllabus-5DH10E-1.pdf

Thesis

By the end of the course, you are expected to submit a thesis 60-80 pages in length. The thesis is to be submitted by the end of the 18th week of the course. The examination seminar takes place on the final week of the course. Theses are assessed with the grades A-F.

Literature

The student, together with the supervisor, will select relevant literature based on the topic of the thesis (according to syllabus, some 5000 pages in total)

Supervision

A supervisor is intended to support your independent learning and research while conducting the thesis. The supervisor does not assign the student a research topic. However, the supervisor should be involved in the choice of research question, theory and method, as well as provides constructive oral and written feedback on drafts of the thesis. The supervisor will also inform you as to the readiness of the thesis for examination, which is conducted by another faculty member (examiner).

You are entitled to 6 individual consultations with your supervisor (via Zoom) of 1 hour. These meetings are to be scheduled at your initiative between you and your supervisor. You will be expected to provide drafts of your work.

Please note that it can be difficult reserving supervisors with specific expertise, so be sure to approach potential supervisors as soon as possible.

Supervision can also be conducted by non-LnU faculty, though they may need to be paired with an LnU co-supervisor. Please contact the thesis course coordinator in such situations.

Theis preparations

In order to ensure your thesis is completed in a timely manner, you are expected to start the course with a research topic, approach, and supervisor already established.

With this in mind, please fill in the questionnaire linked here: https://moodle.lnu.se/mod/questionnaire/view.php?id=4967181

Even if you are unsure, simply include as much information as possible. DH Programme staff will look over your responses and, if needed, provide suggestions to help identify potential topics, supervisors, literature, etc. that you can review. The questionnaire can be continuously revised and updated as your ideas become clearer in the lead-up to the thesis course.
